Experiencing La Union Waves: Elyu surf Clinic by The Surf Institute

October 11, 2015
It was early August when I saw Carla Zamora’s post on her Facebook about the Elyu surf clinic powered by The Surf Institute. The thought about me participating on such event gives me chills. It is indeed a huge step for me, Uhm, Honestly, I could no longer recall how many times I doubted myself before but I chose to register and pay the fee.
Days fast approaching, my hearts keeps on skipping a bit, and I’m scared because I don’t want to experience the wrath of La union waves.

The day has finally arrived, days of agony was about to end.

10/10/2015 10:15 PM We left manila via Partas bus line bound for Laoag. I told the bus conductor to drop us off to Sebay resort. Around 4:00 AM we safely arrived at San Juan, La Union. It was still dark, everyone was peacefully sleeping. We head straight to The circle hostel first but my partner is having second thoughts that’s why we had to come up with a contingency plan. Upon checking for other affordable hostels we stumbled upon Fat wave surf resort's website. I must say their rate is quite affordable that’s why we head to their location which is just across the street.
We waited for couple of minutes then the guard approached us. Rate is PHP 700 + PHP 500 early check in fee. Bath and shower is common. The room is small, you only get what you paid for but what hurts my heart is the early check in fee but since we have no choice we grabbed the offer.

When the sun risen I went to the beach and checked the wave condition, dang! It’s FLAT! I thought I’ll be able to experience the wrath of Elyu waves.
Went back to our room and sit at the chair outside, chill with my mp3 on. Having me time makes me miss my home break, there’s really nothing like Baler. It’s just too different here. Maybe I am just being biased but I wanted to go back and ride its freshly baked waves from the pacific.
We ate our breakfast at San Juan surf resort; I was actually hoping Luke Landrigan is there! (Fan girl mode).
I ordered Danggit while MJ had beef tapa. Our breakfast costs PHP 330.

By 9:00 AM we are already at Elyu classic’s tent waiting for the event to start.
The clinic is a collaboration between the Local boys and girls of Elyu classic and Carla Zamora together with her girls (Taylor Nelson, Sophia Sarlo and Rosie Jaffurs,).

That's my friend going to the nose!

I really learned a lot during this trip. I practiced cross stepping on a NOHO board! After the land lessons we cut all the crap and go to the real deal! This is the time where we can apply what we learned on the discussion earlier. I was conscious but thanks to the coaches and all of us was able to get our own waves, not once but countless times. By the way I rented the board for PHP 200/hour.
The event itself was a success and I am really happy to have these freebies from Lagu and Nani Wahini

After the clinic we ate at Surf shack. We ordered Ilocano Pizza and Buffalo wings.
Best paired with Ranch Dip

It's a must to try their refreshing Mitos drink!
The lunch itself costs us PHP 662.00

2:30 PM Siesta. I would love surf but I’m too sleepy, my body lose the fight and it took me to deepest state of sleep. I woke up around 10:00 PM, no dinner. Since all of the restaurants were already closed, I decided to go back to sleep.
Woke up around 4:00 AM and prepared to leave.
By 6:00 AM we are already in Partas bus terminal San Fernando, La Union, according to the dispatcher the bus bound for manila will arrive between 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM. Since we still have time, we decided to eat our breakfast first because we were both dead hungry hehe.
Macho Temple :)
7:30 AM our bus arrived
2:30 PM Manila
Bus fare: PHP 436 from San Fernando La Union to Cubao

Few things I learned from the experts:

1. Always look on the nose, it will tell you your position on the board (Too much water on the nose means you're near it, less water means you're too near on the tail).
2. Don’t pump, sway left and right.
3. Use your booty when turning, it works especially for girls!
4. Trust yourself and your board
5. Act as if you’re on control, Be confident
6. Surf like you don’t have a leash, Always be mindful of the people around you to avoid injury to self and to others.
7. Check the situation first before going to the water, every swell is different.
8. Do not ever compare yourself to others except yourself.
9. One step at a time.
10.End your act nicely, kick and paddle back to the line up, fall off(no recommended if the spot is crowded) or hold the board and sit.
11. When do you start cross stepping?
A: It’s when the board is already on the top wall, tail is already on the curl, rail already has water (right rail if you’re goofy (back side), left rail if you’re regular (front side).
12.   When you started stepping, always leave your weight on half of your body to maintain the momentum (nose).
13. Look straight, don’t look down.
14. Use small movements.
15. Go with the flow, don’t fight it!
16. Once you’re on the wave, you have to finish it gracefully to avoid being caught inside
17. Choose your wave wisely
18. Bend knees, grab rails to gain stability
19. You should already know which direction to go before you start paddling (Left or right).

ALL ABOUT TATTOOS | How i start to becomealife-size canvass

As an impulsive person I planned to have my first tattoo (without even thinking twice) on my nape. I coveted Rihanna's star tattoo that's why my first tattoo was stars too, since it is my first time I asked my artist to put only 6 because i am afraid that i might not be able to endure the pain. During our session i learned that having a tattoo isn't really that bad because what i felt was a combination of pain and tickle. After several months i just found myself having my second tattoo. Totoo pala yun, once you're in, you'll get addicted to the process of being inked.

This time i asked my new found tattoo artist to add 8 more stars to make it 14 (my birthday) and add an Emo but true life statement script below it.
"Within this girl lies a different story"
Medyo madrama pero it's true, what you see isn't always what you get. Just like any other girls i have my personal issues and insecurities. I may look smart and tough sometimes but deep inside i am an imperfect human being with weaknesses. Don't get me wrong but being imperfect is totally normal, we commit mistakes and that's okay what's important is we learn from it and always look at the brighter side of every situation no matter how bad it may be. Life is easy when you face it with a big smile (Just don't do it on a creepy way.)

Pero hindi lang doon nagtapos ang journey ko to be a life size canvass instead this is just the beginning. My next tattoo was done by my colleague's artist but unfortunately it didn't turned out so well which led me to meet my new and last artist named Jay that eventually became a good friend of mine.
Visit his IG account on the link :)
Why moon? Simply because the sky feels empty without the moon, Why cat? obviously i am a cat person and my cats are my universe.

My next tattoo was handcrafted by Jay again. This time I wanted the sun with breaking waves inside painted on my right leg it since i enjoyed being under the sun and I am an amateur surfer.
This is one of my favorite because it sums up my life. Ako yung tipong ng tao na ayaw ng monotonous life, I always crave for thrill and adventure masaya ako kapag nararamdaman ko yun tinatawag na "adrenaline rush" buwis buhay pero extreme! I call it life with spice, uncertain but 100% not boring. That tattoo is my heart rate - from a normal rate it rapidly change to irregular beat every time i ride a wave.

This tattoo was inspired by the #LIVETOFEEL movement. You can read my story on this LINK

I looks like a simple tagline of my blog but it's not, its more like a reminder to me to live free, worry less and travel more especially when life seems to be tough. The script can only be read properly when i look on a mirror.
Last but not the least (i doubt if this would be the last since i am still working on my next design), since i am a self proclaimed mermaid - i had it painted on my right arm. I also asked my artist to add stingray and turtle because those are my most favorite sea creatures aside from whale sharks. To make it more dramatic i intentionally asked my artist not to draw a face to it. This isn't done yet because we still have to add my most favorite part of the day in Baler which is its jaw dropping sun rise.

Hey! Here's the finish product of my shoulder piece (it is still swollen though)
All my tattoos have deep meanings, I always incorporate personal touch on everything i get myself into. It could be an eyesore to some but this is how i express myself and i already accepted that fact that there are people who look on what's superficial rather than digging what's inside.
The sunrise idea which is now a reality

What i learned for having a tattoo? Just two words,
"Commitment and Regrets"
Commitment - Bago ka magdecide, you have to weigh things, list down all the pros and cons because having a tattoo is permanent, unless you can afford a laser treatment to erase it for you which i am sure is not a smart thing to do because all the pain you've been to while you're being inked will all be wasted.

Regrets - Before putting that design on your body that you just got from the internet, you have to be ready because for sure there are people who have the same tattoo as yours that's why i always create the concept on all my tattoos to make it more unique. It's my skin and i should not feel any regrets on all my designs. You have to make sure you pick what's best for you kasi it is your pride and you will carry it forever. Tattoo is forever, it may fade but it will stick to your skin until you die.

I kept on imagining what would i look like when i am old, i bet i will be a cool granny and all my grandchildren will be very proud that they have a cool granny like me! :)

Always remember: Only dead fish go with the flow, It's okay to be different.

Bay's Inn

Bay's inn
On our second day we've decided to wait for sunrise but seems like the sun is too shy to show up that day that's why we just find a place to eat, I've read a blog about the Bay's inn's  and I've been spotting their restaurant since day one, so the three of us headed to bay's inn and tried what their restaurant has to offer.

Surf competition Baler Day 2

NEXT DAY: More Heats!
7:30 AM We ate our breakfast provided by Barefoot travels after that we went straight to the beach and watched heats for the novice, then followed by my heat, again i topped the quarter semis. After the few heats they gave us 30 minute lunch break. When we were walking on the shore my boyfriend noticed Derek Ramsay because the Philippine Frisbee team was there too, i approached him and asked if can we have a picture with him, he approved so here it is.

Surf competition Baler Day 1

Decision of a lifetime
I decided to join a surfing competition to add another "DONE" on my to do list. It was the 6th baler beginner's surf cup and it will be on 11-13 of April in Sabang Beach Baler just in front of Mahdox surf school. March 6th when I finally registered on the said cup, ofcourse doubts is always there  and i kept on asking myself if i can really do it or am i ready for that kind of competition but despite of that thoughts i still decided to push through with it because no matter what happen, Win or lose i will charge it to experience.

We started conversing because we had the same interest which is to join the Baler beginners cup, I asked her if she knows an affordable package tour going to baler on the date of the cup and she referred me to her friend Rons, the co-owner of BAREFOOT TRAVELS
